OUR ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE

Mission Zero Waste (MØW) is a strategic and innovative initiative of Leatherina. Leatherina is a proud promoter of the concept of ‘circular economy’ which is described in a model of consumption during production, which involves 6R basics: Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle in existing supply chain of materials and products for as long as possible. For a product to be included within the circular economy framework, its raw materials, its wastage, and its end-of-life residuals should be kept within the economy, wherever possible. The impact of integrating the circular economy concept into Leatherina’s existing business would mean enhanced flow of goods and services through the ‘value circle’, by systematically exploiting each raw material’s component to the maximum, and dropping production wastage down to zero.

Leatherina is an SME in the leather goods production sector that has been engaged in manufacturing high-quality leather bags, backpacks, and accessories since 2016, with a business strategy of sustainability and environmental protection. Leatherina is a certified member of WFTO in fair trade and seeks to incorporate materials and technology, guided by SDG 12, in promoting responsible consumption and production. Our commitment to sustainable production, environment-friendly materials, and animal welfare makes our products unique. Our manufacturing operations ensure social security for all our workers which includes fair wages and equal treatment.

6R BASICS OF OUR MØW

Rethink

In a world grappling with the urgent need for sustainable practices, traditional manufacturing processes driven solely by profit must be reevaluated. We at Leatherina are increasingly prioritising sustainability, careful material selection, innovative techniques, and eco-conscious design choices. By embracing these principles, we can reduce the carbon footprint and create a more efficient and environmentally friendly manufacturing facility.

One of the key steps towards sustainable manufacturing is selecting materials with minimal environmental impact. Instead of relying solely on conventional options, we are exploring eco-friendly alternatives such as recycled materials, renewable resources, and biodegradable substances. These choices reduce the strain on natural resources, limit waste generation, and promote a circular economy.

Refuse

At our workplace, we have taken a firm stance against using materials and manufacturing processes that pose harm to our planet and people. We firmly refuse to engage in any activities that contribute to environmental degradation or compromise the well-being of individuals. Our commitment lies in promoting sustainable designs, ensuring ethical sourcing of materials, and adopting eco-friendly manufacturing methods. We believe in creating a safe and responsible work environment that aligns with our values of environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Reduce

We are dedicated to minimizing waste generation through innovative design techniques, efficient production planning, and effective production management. By optimizing the utilization of materials such as leather, fabrics, and other trims, we strive to maximize their value and minimize unnecessary waste. Through careful planning and creative designs, we aim to minimize scraps and unused materials, ensuring that every resource is utilized to its fullest potential. By implementing these strategies, we actively contribute to reducing our environmental footprint and promoting a sustainable and efficient manufacturing process.

Reuse

One of our best practices is the reuse of logistics and resources, including the upcycling of textiles. By finding innovative ways to repurpose and extend the life cycle of materials, we minimize waste and reduce our reliance on new resources. Through initiatives such as upcycling, we give new life to discarded textiles, transforming them into valuable products. This approach not only contributes to environmental conservation but also aligns with our mission to create a circular economy, where resources are utilized efficiently and waste is minimized.

Repair

In our manufacturing ethos, maximizing product lifetime is a fundamental goal. Through open communication and collaboration with our buyers, we prioritize the repair of our products to minimize waste generation and unnecessary costs. Understanding the importance of extending the lifespan of our goods, we proactively address any issues or damages and strive to repair rather than replace. By adopting this approach, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also promote a more sustainable and cost-effective production process. We believe that by fostering a culture of resource maximization, we contribute to a greener and more responsible manufacturing industry.

Recycle

In our innovative design section, we continuously explore ways to utilize leather waste and scraps, transforming them into beautiful small items. Instead of discarding cut pieces, we repurpose them into useful goods that not only add value but also generate profits for our business. Over time, we have cultivated a pool of buyers who appreciate these unique items as corporate gifts and lifestyle accessories. By creatively repurposing leather waste, we contribute to reducing waste generation while satisfying the demands of our discerning customers. This sustainable approach not only benefits the environment but also strengthens our brand’s reputation and profitability.

JOIN OUR MISSION

At Leatherina, we firmly believe that achieving a mission of zero waste and sustainable consumption is not an impossible feat. It is not a task that can be accomplished by a single entity, nor is it something that can be checked off as complete. Each one of us holds a share of responsibility, and it is in our collective capacity that we can make a difference. Together, we have the power to build a sustainable economy that will contribute to a better world for all. The time to act is now, especially when it comes to addressing the pollution caused by the fashion industry and the challenges it poses to our ecosystem.
